Happy New Year!!

All the staff and management of   Alex Cenla wish you a happy and hopefully tiny bit better new year!! (Alex is pictured in the middle, right.)

Suddenlink vs KALB NBC-CBS—Update Agreement reached.

OK..I am going to jump into this farce and put in my two-bits..

Remember Suddenlink provides a base for Hoak Media to reach more audience.

If it were not for the cable company carrying the two stations they would lose probably 50%  of their viewing audience. Hoak’s demand for a 200% increase in fees is absurd.

Alex has had a bit of experience in the media and is looking at it from his point of view.

What is Hoak trying to prove, an excess of greed?

A TV Station operates by  advertising income.

They sell that advertising by offering good programing.

Are they trying to augment their lack of advertising income?

Without Suddenlink ..They loose half or more of their viewing base.

Go figure?

Who is the bad guy in this?

Two unpublished photographs from WW-1 time period. U.S. Navy craft.

In keeping with my off the wall blog entry’s .. I was going through some photographs I obtained a while back.  They were   taken by a man  who was from Alexandria and in the U.S. Navy around 1914–15 time period. Some of the photographs are quite historic and very rare. I thought I would share two with you.

Below is a  photograph of U.S. Submarine number 3. This was taken in the territory of Hawaii. Probably shortly after WW-1. Those of you who are naval history students will find these quite interesting.

Submarine K3.

This is of Sub Chaser Number ONE. If you notice the numbers on the ship are SC1… This is the first ship designed to hunt down submarines and try to destroy them. This photo was taken off the coast of Bremuda during or right after WW-1. It has never been published before and is copyrighted. Any use must reference this blog site.

Enjoy, and if you would like to see  a few more, please comment.

Cajun Pawn Stars and a few other comments.,

Yesterday we broke the news on an important event that is taking place here in Alexandria. We will gain national attention each week on the History Channel.

This can help with diverting more tourism into Central Louisiana. If used correctly, we can all benifit from the attention that will be focused on our area.

I do believe that the city officials did not take the matter seriously..Perhaps they will now.  Anything that brings attention to Central Louisiana and helps our image and promotes our history and culture is a good thing.

I do hope that our news media and other organisations will jump in and help promote this. I have several friends that became involved in the show…They did so with some reservation in the beginning, but when they saw what was happening they joined in with gusto…

We have a broken city government..That problem can only be solved with our voters taking the necessary action in the next election.  Our problems make great cannon fodder for some of the local blogs, but after a while even that gets tiresome… I ask them rather that making fun of each other, why not try to be constructive. ..They may make fun of me for saying that but  there are a lot of things that need to be tackled rather than each other every day.. I  do not pretend to be better than anyone else but  we all need to set our sights higher.  I am guilty of attacking windmills but I am going to try  to stay off the donkey for a while….They may attack me for saying that…So be it.

I will pass this story on to you. (True or not? I make no claims.)

A group of officers connected with the Continental Tire Co. came to town to study the chance of placing a plant here in Central Louisiana.

They stayed at a local motel. Watching television that night they came upon the broadcast of a city council meeting  on channel four.

After watching the show for about a half hour they looked at each other and said.. ” Lets go with the other town we had in consideration.”

More breaking news on Cajun Pawn Stars. Official press release.

via press release from History] HISTORY(R) PUTS A SOUTHERN SPIN ON ITS MEGA HIT SERIES WITH… CAJUN PAWN STARS
New Series Premiering on Sunday, January 8 at 10pm ESTNew York, NY, December 2011 – Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas, made internationally famous in HISTORY’s hit series Pawn Stars, isn’t the only family-run shop in America that’s bursting at the seams with one-of-a-kind historical items and fascinating stories. Silver Dollar Pawn & Jewelry Center in Alexandria, Louisiana owned and operated by Jimmie DeRamus and his family, is a colorful place that collects an eclectic array of historical merchandise, with a daily stream of quirky local characters attempting to sell, purchase or pawn items – including livestock. Now, the fascinating world of a southern pawn shop is revealed in the new 30-minute/14-episode series – Cajun Pawn Stars premiering Sunday, January 8 at 10pm EST.

Jimmie, a.k.a. “Big Daddy,” has been buying and selling for over 27 years and, no matter whether he’s haggling over the price of a vintage 1936 Ford flathead V8, a herd of donkeys or Jerry Lee Lewis’ first recording, he’s as savvy as they come. That said, it’s also important to Jimmie that both parties leave the deal with smiles on their faces. That’s how they do things in central Louisiana, where many of his customers are his neighbors.

Jimmie is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to valuable and historic collectibles. He’s a cautious buyer – one has to be to survive in this business – but also unafraid to make a bold move when he spots a true gem. For example, in the premiere episode, he doesn’t think twice about making a staggering $500,000 offer to acquire rare $10,000 and $5,000 bank notes.

Silver Dollar Pawn is one of the biggest shops in the south, a whopping 20,000 square feet that houses more than 100,000 artifacts. It’s a veritable museum, frequented by school and bus tours. Each episode will focus not just on interesting items but the unique dynamic of Jimmie and his family, his daughter Tammie DeRamus and his younger brother Johnnie DeRamus, and their circle of expert appraisers and buyers from the area.

Cajun Pawn Stars is produced for HISTORY by Leftfield Pictures. Executive Producers for HISTORY are Paul Cabana and Mary Donahue. Brent Montgomery and David George are Executive Producers for Leftfield Pictures. Joel Patterson is Showrunner for Leftfield.

I have found out by experience that the general consensus of most people in tourism and in city government around here is to ignore it till it slaps them in the ass and then they scramble to try to take some credit for it. It is my understanding that our city government in no way encoraged or took part in it’s becoming a reality.
(That may end up being a good thing.)

Who is interested in replacing Goins on the city council? Update

OK..I know I said I was through  with the whole one ring circus going on right now.

All the attention from local blogs  is  on who will be able to cast the deciding vote on Goin’s replacement on the city council. Or  how they can vote…or when they can vote for that matter…… (As if anyone remotely gives a damn.)

Here is one more question that no one seems to have been able to grasp in their minds…..Who from Goins  district wants to fill the void he created? If someone stepped forward and expressed a desire to do so, would his or her voice be heard? I have heard no one mentioned…I am positive if someone expressed a willingness to serve the rest of the term and was qualified..He or she would probably be ignored for the back room boys puppet of choice…I am sure there are two or three clones waiting in the wings…

Well anyway ….who cares who fills the position?  The way things are going now, a small rodent could do a better job than most of them.

Journalism 101…Find out who wants to replace him. (If anyone.)

Or maybe it is a done deal already? (They just do not want to say the anointed one’s name yet…..)

Lets hope those neighborhood groups are thinking clearly….We do not need another Larve-pain.

Looks like it is going to be the same song..second verse..Von Jennings? Really?

Why..oh why..am I not surprised? (Place sound of hysterical laughter here…)

Alexandria, Louisiana 1944

Once upon a time Alexandria was moving forward and actually had some very sophisticated and classy events.  But that was way back then and what would this compare to now? Any comments?
