Beautiful old home on Jackson Street.

The landmarks of Alexandria are disappearing one by one. Soon the stately mansions will all be gone. I stand and watch as tears run down my face.

I know there are reasons some of these homes can not be maintained.

The cost of  restoring is high. I hate to see them go. Is there something we can all band together to do? A coat of paint on this one would turn it into a sparkling gem once again. Instead of just talking about preservation, lets do something. There must be a program somewhere that would help or even a grant of some kind.

Why?

Unfortunately, the older lady who lives there does not have the funds nor the youth to fix her house up and her son, who also lives there, is too lazy to do anything about it. They also own the other beautiful home out by the interestate that is in sad disrepair.

  2. Maybe this should be presented to Lowe’s or Home Depot as a project house. They both advertise how great their paint is, how it defies weather, covers in one coat, etc. There is a church nearby that could adopt it as a neighborhood project for youth and have them paint it. All it takes is a little creativity to put together a proposal.

Juvenile court could sentence offenders to “community service” to help with the clean up and sprucing up. Paint manufacturers could be written directly for participation.

Given the ladies’ circumstances it could become a great community project.

  3. That’s a great idea Bird! I know there is a house on 19th and Marye, or 20th and Marye that Lowes provided the paint for and did a special on. I also know that Home Depot has very small grants for paint if you write in and tell them why you need it. Unfortunately, you would have to get the owners’ cooperation. I am not sure she would cooperate…nor her son. I have spoken to them personally. But, you never know! Maybe the right person….
