Our Alexandria Police Department.

I just have to say a few words about our police department and how it operates.

I grew up with a grandfather who served on the Alexandria police department  for over 30 years.

During that time he served in every capacity but Chief.    He was mentioned for the job one or two times and his answer was short and to the point…NO.

Looking back on the things he had to put up with in the  1920-50 time period and the stories he told me, I understand why he said no.

This was before the time of even patrol car radio’s. The police back then  relied on  call boxes at different locations  throughout the city. Telephones mounted on poles in metal boxes. The method of calling patrolmen was to turn on a light that was strung over the intersection where the box was located. If it was on they picked up  and found out what the problem was.

They walked beats back then.

Before and after shift hours they would have to answer roll call at the station at 6th and Lee at that time.

Each officer was assigned several blocks in town that they patrolled during their duty hours.

They would direct traffic on busy days and write parking tickets and watch over their areas for any problems or unusual happenings.

The trust factor was so good back then that most of the officers held keys to almost all of the commercial stores on their beat.

In case of a problem they could enter the building if it were closed.

On some weekends, as a teenager,  I would go with my grandfather on his patrols and watch his work with people.

I saw how hard it was to deal with certain types of citizens.

There are more problems  today than then. There are a multitude of even worse problems facing anyone in police work now.

Laws are more complicated and harder to enforce today than back then.  If someone shot at you in the past. You shot back. If he or she died, it was a pretty open and shut case. No drawn out investigation or suspension from work. You went back the next day as if nothing happened. Seldom if ever was it unjustified. It is different today.

It was a different world back then. (I use that term a lot today.)

We are going to have to have a new chief for the Alexandria force. It  will take a person who can see and  understand the going’s on of day to day law enforcement.

It is no longer my grandfathers world of policing. It is work of another kind entirely. We need some one who can handle the job and understand its fine lines.

I hope the job is filled with someone who can advance the force and not just be a political hack.

I  hope the person selected is totally  qualified and understands the job.  You can not let other people do it for you.

Our past Chief was a good and effective one.

We need one today  who is even better than he was.

Even though I have never wanted to follow in my grandfathers foootsteps, I did see and understand even way back then what it is like to be a policeman.

I would not want the job.

I hope it is filled correctly though.

Something to think about…….

Email lottery winner. Just totaled up my winnings..(Not!)

Well, Gee, Golly, Wiz. Yuck..Yuck.

I find it funny and moronic at the same time that these cretins continue to waste  their finger energy even typing or cut and pasting for that matter.

By my figuring I have won over a trillion dollars, but have yet to have received one notice by mail or from any legal bank or financial group,  as to how to pick up my winnings.  Oh well, I hope they gave it to charity.

Just an observation. I guess I will order myself a nice Roll’s Royce sedan.

There should be a way to return to sender multiplied by one billion….

Union Army occupies Alexandria. May 1863.

Union Army marches on Alexandria. May 1863.

Thought this was interesting. Found it hanging on the wall at the Louisiana History Museum.  They were kind enough to let me publish it here.

It  shows the Union Army marching down Front Street in May of 1863.  This is just before they burned the city, destroying the  Court House and all records from before the Civil War.

I do think a blog should educate as well as comment on social and political issues.

The latest blog war’s report.

Well they are at it again. I must admit it gets readership. Much like when I purposely ran the story on the anti-gun yahoo who shot an attempted intruder. My reader ship went up to almost 100 people the next day. I do not take a stand on that issue, if you are responsible enough to own and use a gun, so be it.

On the issue of the Bentley, you can look at it from many different directions. I just hope a conclusion is reached. As far as the amount of money used from your’s or my pocket, I do not think we will feel the immediate effects. The main point is we need increased awareness of our downtown area. At this point in time any way we can get it…Its a gamble, but you have to roll the dice..

To me politic’s are akin to a football game. You keep pushing till someone wins… Good or bad.  Most of the time things will sort themselves out …

Each issue has its good and bad points.. I have my  own opinions, but end up agreeing with some of the outlook’s   put forward by all three..

I enjoy the blog’s of all three. Greg, Lamar and Ed. They all have interesting subjects to comment about.

Lamar is liberal, Greg is conservative. Ed , well I can not put him in a niche. He has his own outlook on things.

I get along with all three. They each know who I am and have respected my wish to stay as just Alex.

Have at it gentlemen, a little conflict is the spice of blogs as far as I am concerned.

To me its just a way to let off a little steam  sometimes…. or bring attention to an event in our everyday life.

Bentley deal may be at hand.

I hope that there will be a deal done.

I hope that the buyers will keep the structure true to its original appearance.

But most of all I hope the items Bob Dean has placed  (in storage) are returned.

A reopened Bentley will help revitalize downtown Alexandria.

Time will tell..Check this site for more…

Do you sometime’s yearn for the simpler days?

Anybody have a clue to who this gentleman is?  He once lived and ran his business on the streets of Alexandria, La.

Damit, I admire him!!

Alex

Oh, for a much simpler time!

Who will run for Alexandria, La. Mayor?

I will make you a good honest mayor....Gulp!

Well it’s almost time for the rodents to come out of the woodpile.

How many and who will run for Mayor of Alexandria?

Will the current Mayor run again or set his sights on bigger game?

Will someone who actually has Alexandria’s well-being in their thoughts run or will it be for their well-being

Most of the time, it is for the latter.

Very soon now we will see the mostly unqualified and a few that   (maybe) are… come slinking into the light of day.

We can only hope for the best and expect the worse..

I do know the race issue will be played with brick like force and that in its self,  is source for shame.

We can only wait for the games to begin.

I can just hear the ring announcer in the most phony of all   sports, step in to say…”Let’s get ready to rumble!!!”

(No candidates, real or imaginary were hurt in the making of this comment.)

(yet.)

Anyone have any guesses as to the line up for the game?

                                  (Guess not.)

Alex

Alexandria, La. (perhaps a settlement?) Cleco suit.

The game is back on with the city  and Cleco…I do hope the terms end up favorable for the city and not a copout to “big business”.

As in most cases of this type, you must remember that the lawyers end up gaining more than the citizens… . There will be more legal suits when the settlement is reached and announced  in detail, if one is near… The vultures  are circling right now.

Robert Charles Guidry -71- RIP … “Bobby Charles”

Bobby died Thursday in New Orleans.

See you later Alligator!

He wrote his own epitaph back in the early fifty’s and sang it loud.
