In keeping with my promise to show you the effects of “progress” as a reason for historic preservation, I give you 3rd Street in Alexandria.

Once a busy auto and people packed main thoroughfare in our fair city. Today a bland semi-decorated has- been.
Many groups have and are currently working on their respective ideas to revitalize this area.
I have spoken with and listened to their ideas or read about them.
Is there an answer on how to change this area? I think so. It just has not materialized so far.

Third Street was once the center of Alexandria’s commerical district.

Busy and thriving from the 1800’s till the 1960’s.

Today you could fire a shotgun down the center of 3rd Street from in front of the Hotel Bentley and not endanger anyone.

A lot of the empty vacant spaces could become ofices and living areas with a little thought and interest.
Let’s not end up with 3rd Street just an empty parking lot.

Think of what it was in the past.
Now what can it be in the future?
